Shower Waterproofing and Why It’s SO Important
  • Posted By : amy/

  • Under : Uncategorised, Waterproofing

Waterproofing is one of the single most important things that must be done correctly when building, renovating or repairing a shower in your home. When waterproofing a bathroom, you must comply with Australian standards and building codes. This is easier said than done, if you don’t know what to look for the young apprentice of the day may be responsible for waterproofing and then the next day the tiler comes in and tiles over the work so you may not know it’s even a problem till it becomes a problem.

The waterproof membrane stops moisture and water from seeping into the walls or floors. Not having this done by a qualified professional can potentially lead to tens of thousands of dollars in costs later down the line. Not to mention save you the stress of possibly having to rebuild a major part of your home.

The Purpose of Shower Waterproofing

Shower waterproofing is the process of coating your shower with a waterproof membrane to stop moisture from seeping into the structure of your home.

Essentially, it stops leaks!

You may remember seeing a grey, pink or blue coating of sticky paint during construction or a remodel, this is the membrane.

The waterproof membrane acts as a barrier that sits between the walls and floor of your home and the tiles of your shower or bath. You may not be able to see it once the tiles are on but it forms the most essential part of any shower or bathroom build!

Shower Waterproofing Regulations

There are many regulations that surround waterproofing your shower; therefore, it is best to have your shower waterproofing performed by a professional. In Queensland, a qualified tradesman who holds a waterproofing license must waterproof your shower. If they do not carry a license they are performing waterproofing services illegally and should not be hired. So, this is an essential question to ask your repairer before they start any job in your home.

The regulations for how much waterproof membrane you need to use in your shower are as follows:

. The whole floor needs to be waterproofed
. The shower walls need to be waterproofed up to a minimum of 1800mm

If you have a shower niche that sits slightly higher than the minimum clearance for shower waterproofing then make sure that it is waterproofed entirely as this is a common area where water can seep into the walls of your home.

The Dangers Of Incorrect Waterproofing

There are many ways that leaks can appear in your shower if the waterproofing is done incorrectly, the shower niche being one major example. A lack of waterproof membrane that is not applied to Australian standards may cause the following:

. Water damage and swelling in walls and floors
. Termites to enter the home
. Tiles to become loose, increasing the risk of more leaks
. Structural damage to the home

All of these issues can arise at any time, even if your shower is brand new. These waterproofing mistakes can cost you tens of thousands of dollars in home repairs, especially if you are unaware of the leak for a long time. Therefore, it is extremely important that you ensure that your shower is waterproofed correctly and that you hire a qualified and skilled professional to carry out the work.

On the QBCC website it states:

Whilst a QBCC waterproofing licence is not required where the value of the work does not exceed $3,300, a person applying, installing or repairing waterproofing including surface preparation, and apply or installing material or systems for preventing moisture penetration less than $3,300 may be required to provide a certificate stating that they are a competent person to undertake the work. A person that holds a waterproofing licence as a contractor would be considered a competent person.

If you find that the waterproof membrane in your shower needs to be repaired we can provide waterproofing services to your shower ensuring it is watertight and not leaking. We are qualified waterproofing technicians and hold all the current QBCC licences to provide you a professional result.

All you have to do is contact us on 13 000 LEAKY, and let us know how we can help.

What We Do During A Partial Gold Coast Shower Rebuild

This young couple bought their first home at Mermaid Waters in the Gold Coast knowing that the shower was leaking to the garage downstairs. They had been able to negotiate a good price on the property because of the leaking shower so they decided to do a partial Gold Coast shower rebuild which would also remove the shower’s plastic tray, which was looking a bit tired.

With a partial Gold Coast shower rebuild we remove the floor and the first run of wall tiles and wall sheeting to expose the wall studs and ensure they have not been water damaged. Then we repair the floor and walls, waterproof and re-tile. We provide the tiles or in this case the customer provided their own tiles and also ordered a new shower screen to give the bathroom a new look which really complimented the rest of their home.

Are the leaking showers in Brisbane and the Gold Coast due to the weather?

This year Queensland has experienced an extremely hot and dry summer. The effect which this long hot dry summer has had on homes is easily seen by the contraction or shrinking of buildings and their foundations. This has caused a range of problems in many homes around Brisbane and the Gold Coast. If you take the time to look around your home, it is likely you will see some evidence of this in the form of cracks in wall junctions which are visible. In more severe cases we have seen wall tiles in bathroom walls and floor cracking and start to come away.

This shrinking and moving of homes can be one of the major contributors to the high number of leaking showers all over Brisbane and the Gold Coast this year. We have seen a rise in the waterproofing in showers failing this year due to the hot dry summer.

There is another not so obvious problem which the weather this year has caused in leaking showers. We have also seen a rise in the number of homes affected by termites due to a leaking shower. This we believe is due to the dry weather. If your shower is leaking anywhere in Brisbane or the Gold Coast this year you can be certain that it will attract termites quicker than ever because they are on the hunt, hungry for moist soft timber.

Check your backing walls to the shower and ensure there is no moisture coming through. If your purchasing a new property or have recently purchased a new property ensure the building and pest report has not identified high moisture reading around your wet areas and if they have, do yourself a favour and call someone out to check the shower.

Is It Better To Repair Or Replace Bathroom Tiles?
  • Posted By : amy/

Bathroom tiles can suffer significant damage after many years of use. Some of the signs of worn bathroom tiles you will see in your home include visible cracks, chips, stains, broken tiles and grout joints that are damaged. These deteriorated or damaged tiles can become a major issue especially when water leaks through the cracks or chips into your shower walls, floor and other associated bathroom features. Not to mention no one enjoys bathing in a bathroom with damaged tiles!

When making the decision to replace or repair your tiles there are a few things to keep in mind. Although buying new tiles can be expensive the labour involved to repair old tiles, which includes scraping off glue and smoothing edges, could end up just a costly as replacing them. Despite this every case is different. If you only have a few loose tiles that need to be stripped back and reglued repairing them is a very cost-effective solution. On the other hand, if you are renovating your bathroom it is best to replace old tiles while everything else is being replaced too.

Dripping Shower Vs. Leaking shower

Dripping Shower Vs. Leaking shower
Every now and then, households get to face the herculean problem of a leaking shower or a dripping shower. Just only the sound of drip… drip…drip… from a shower head or any other part of the shower is enough to drive any homeowner insane. Both leaking shower and dripping shower are considered a common household problem, that leads to a considerable waste of water and money.

Often, most people confuse both to mean the same thing, after all, they both lead to substantial water loss and other damages, but on closer inspection, leaking shower, and dripping shower are two distinct shower problems. As a homeowner, it is essential you know the difference, as this knowledge, might save you a whole of cash when it comes to repairs/replacements in the future

Dripping shower
A dripping shower head or shower is annoying, owing to the dripping sound it makes, and damages it causes. Typically, a dripping shower often results in two types of drips; slow drip and fast (steady drip). Over time it leads to an increase in water bills and grout starts to mould and decay. In addition, it can also result in staining and rust near the drain. So, what causes a dripping shower? Typical causes of dripping shower include loose and worn out parts such as valves or faucets, and sometimes the shower head itself. It could also be that the shower tap is not turning off entirely.

Leaking shower
Unlike a dripping shower that the cause is mainly surficial, a leaking shower, on the other hand, implies that there is an underlying problem. The damages caused by a leaky shower are more severe and even catastrophic. Damages range from structural damages, mould buildup, foul stench, and odour, metal failure as a result of rust, wood failure as a result of the accumulation of moisture and so on.

Whereas the effects of a dripping shower are only seen on the shower head, the effects of a leaking shower can be felt across the entire house. Poor plumbing is usually the number cause of leaking shower. The entire plumbing work of a house could be so poorly done, that certain problems will arise, sooner rather than later. Other causes of leaking shower include, wear and tear, poor quality of materials hostile cleaning products, and movement of the building leading to loose joints, uneven floor, and damages to plumbing work.

Both dripping shower and leaking shower shouldn’t be taken lightly. If you discover any signs of them in your home, quickly put a call through to a professional. Swift action will save you a lot in terms of damages and cost.

6 reasons to fix a leaking shower fast

Why you should fix your leaking shower quickly?
Not only is a leaky shower discomforting, but it can also quickly become a nuisance to you and your family. Often most homeowners would rather live with the damage, and manage the leak the best way they can, but this often results in several other complications and severe damages.

There are several instances where homeowners are even unaware that their shower is leaking, and this can go on for days, and weeks underneath the shower recess or even behind walls. Although the signs of a leaking shower might not be evident at first, the damage done can be astronomical if it is not promptly treated by a professional.

If you are still indecisive about whether or not you should fix your leaky shower immediately, the following reasons may help convince you to take swift action.

Structural Damages
Leaky showers can cost severe structural damages to your property if left unattended to. You might face severe damages to your floors, walls, and the foundation of your home and this might make your home uninhabitable for a certain period. Such damages might cost you a good amount of money to repair and even replace.

Buildup of Mould
The accumulation of mould as a result of a leaking shower results in the buildup of problems on two fronts; firstly, it can lead to health complications such as respiratory problems, allergies, and hypersensitivity. Secondly, it can result in certain structural damages to the wooden parts of your home, resulting in unpleasant odour around your house, and also unpleasant sights.

Breeding ground for white ant
The perfect breeding ground for white ants is a combination of moisture and timber. The accumulation of moisture by the wooden parts of your home due to a faulty shower will attract white ants into your home, and their numbers can rise from a couple of hundred ants to thousands if the leak lingers on.

Metal failure
A continuous shower leak can result in the development of rust, and this gradual affects all the materials around it, and if the leak is not repaired on time, the metal will deteriorate leading to structural failure in most cases.

Damaged wood
A persistent shower leak on the wooden parts of your home can lead to the saturation of the wood supporting the base of the enclosure. Continuous exposure of the wood to moisture can cause; deterioration of the wood, facilitate the growth of mould, provide a breeding ground for white ants, and even lead to offensive odour around your home.

Other problems that can result from failing to repair a leaky shower immediately include;

Falling off tiles (loose tiles)
Damages to paintwork and plasterboard surfaces
Damages to grout in your home.
Stained walls and ceilings

A leaking shower shouldn’t be taken lightly, and should you discover you have one in any part of your home, it is essential you put a call through to a professional. Quick action from you might just be what saves you from health problems, severe structural damages, and even costly repairs.

Leaking Shower – What Am I Looking For?

What are the signs of a leaky shower?

A leaking shower can create major problems, apart from mould and damp in walls, a leaking shower can lead to building issues and structural failure.

Do you know the signs of a leaking shower?

There are numerous signs to look for and many do not only appear in the bathroom area, they can also manifest in other locations around the home.

Here are a few signs to look if you suspect your shower is leaking –

  • Bathroom doors and surrounding areas

Most of the doors/architraves and skirting’s are made from wood or a compressed wood compound. These materials have a tendency to swell when they come in contact with moisture over a period of time.

Look for swelling or discolouration; this may be an indication of escaping water.

Look at the bottom of your architraves door jams and skirting in the general area of the bathroom. If there has been a leak for a long period, you may see rotting timber, this is a serious sign and the leak must be stopped immediately before more damage can be done.

  • Loose tiles

Loose tiles are a very common sign of a leaky showers and moisture damages. This is due to the fact that the adhesives put in place to hold the tiles are weakened and damaged by the moisture building up behind them.

Look for a warped surface on the wall, which can cause a shift in the tiles.

  • Damaged walls and ceilings

If you observe your walls and ceiling closely and regularly, you can get a hint if there is a water leak. Water leaks from leaking showers can lead to degradation and weakening of ceilings and walls.

Look for water stains to walls and ceilings and changes to surfaces i.e loss of shine and aesthetic appearance.

  • The Smell of rot

When it comes to a leaky shower, the smell of rot is usually what gives it away in most cases. Our walls are a mixture of various materials like wood, cement, and mortar. Moisture from a leaking shower causes these materials to decay and weaken which usually leads to a very unpleasant smell around the house. These smells can be attributed to rotting wood, mould and point to a high probability that there is a major leak in the house.

  • Falling/Bubbling paint on the wall

Apart from the degradation and wear of materials, moisture also has an adverse effect on paint on the wall and timber surrounds.

Look for moisture underneath any layer of paint, gaps or bubbles that form underneath the paint.

Look for cracking and flaking paint.
Once these are observed it can indicate moisture damage and the possibility of a leaking shower.
If paint no longer sticks to the wall, there is an obvious indicator!

  • Grout failure

Grout is the rough sand-like material that is used to fill in gaps between the tiles on your walls and floor. The right grout provides a durable waterproof barrier which compliments the tiles and style of the bathroom. Grout can crack, shrink or fall out and begins to lose its grip due to various reason which can lead to moisture in the walls.

Look for
  • Wet floors
  • Smelly/wet carpet or rugs
  • Visible spaces in Tiles
  • Gaps in wall joints
  • Watermarks on ceilings and walls underneath bathrooms
  • Off-color marks on tiles
Most leaking showers can be repaired without removing tiles at a very reasonable rate.
